Elden Ring Nightreign is a co-op multiplayer spin-off of the acclaimed action RPG Elden Ring, developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco. With a 2025 release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC (Steam), Nightreign promises to deliver an innovative gaming experience within the Elden Ring universe.
The cooperative nature of the game stands out, allowing up to three players to join forces to tackle the challenges of the night. The game introduces heroes with unique abilities that become even more formidable when working together as a team, bringing a new dimension to the gameplay of Elden Ring. Players will face a relentless environmental threat that sweeps the earth, changing each game session, culminating in a battle against the magnificent boss of that night.
Game director Junya Ishizaki describes Nightreign as an opportunity to create something new and challenging, while also drawing on the experience gained from previous FromSoftware titles. Ishizaki, a fan of cooperative multiplayer experiences, wants to offer an experience focused on that with Nightreign.
While inspired by a variety of genres and titles, Ishizaki recognizes the influence of the speedrunning community in game design. The fast paced and mechanical wall jumping encourages players to optimize their gameplay and complete challenges as efficiently as possible.
Although set in the Elden Ring universe, Nightreign features a completely independent story, parallel to the events of the main game and the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. The narrative does not involve George R. R. Martin, author who collaborated in the construction of the world of Elden Ring.
The game is designed to be played in a team of three, but it also allows playing solo, with the difficulty being adjusted according to the number of players. The three-player option was a balance decision to ensure a rewarding cooperative experience without compromising the game’s balance.
The game’s structure is based on three-day cycles, providing a condensed RPG experience that concentrates the most appreciated elements of Elden Ring, such as exploration, character building and boss fights, into shorter, more intense gameplay sessions. The game features eight types of final bosses that are gradually unlocked as the player progresses. Replayability is encouraged by the presence of Relics, rewards earned on each run that allow you to improve characters for future sessions.
Although more accessible to new players than previous FromSoftware titles, Nightreign remains a challenge. The game does not include assistance features, which reflects the developers’ confidence in the players ability to overcome challenges with dedication and experimentation.
Nightreign is not a live service game. Players who purchase the game will have access to all content from the start, with no additional purchases or subscriptions required.
